So you wanna start a blog huh? Part 1: What's your why?

A little birdie told me you wanted to start your own blog! Well I’m glad you came to the party. I’m going to go in detail about how to start a blog using the WordPress platform. If you don’t know what that is, I’ll be explaining that to you in detail in the next post.

What’s your niche?

So, before you start a blog, I think it’s safe to say you need to figure out what you’re going to blog about, right? Well maybe yes and maybe no. I’m a new blogger myself and I’m also trying to figure out what my niche is! Well then, I’m going to blog about everything I love until I figure it out. Serial blogger on the loose!

If you have done your research online, the most successful bloggers tell you to figure out your niche and not to blog all over the place (like I plan to)! And you should take their advice if you already know exactly what you’re going to blog about.

I don’t know how many of you guys are new to the blogging world, but you will see the word niche a lot. And guess what? I found a perfect definition of niche (marketing)

Concentrating all marketing efforts on a small but specific and well defined segment of the population. Niches do not ‘exist‘ but are ‘created‘ by identifying needs, wants, and requirements that are being addressed poorly or not at all by other firms, and developing and delivering goods or services to satisfy them. As a strategy, niche marketing is aimed at being a big fish in a small pond instead of being a small fish in a big pond.

Like I said before, I’m still fumbling around to find my niche but I know I’ll get there! And you will too. Here are some ideas to get the wheels turning!

Home Decor

Now, just so you don’t misunderstand, these are not niches, these are just ideas to get you in the right direction toward finding a niche. For example, if you chose cooking, your niche could be cooking for people with diabetes. Do you kinda get the picture?

Anyhow, once you find your why, you’re ready to start your journey!

Lessons for Life: Episode 1- My first Youtube video tutorial was an epic fail

And so it begins

A little background story on my title; when I was younger and I learned a lesson “the hard way”, my mom would call them lessons for life. It would drive me insane every time she said it, but as I got older, it grew on me. So whenever I learn a lesson the “hard way”, I tell myself, ” lessons for life Jojo”. So I thought this would be the perfect title for this series. And episode 1 deals with my first YouTube video tutorial topped with an epic fail.

When you assume…

This morning, I spent 3 and a half hours trying to take a video of my friend’s nails, for my new YouTube channel and my blog. I watched a ton of videos and assumed I would get it right away.

When I started, I struggled with positioning my DSLR camera on the tripod, and when I finally got that right, I struggled with the lighting. I ended up opening the blinds, and drawing back the curtains, because in all the YouTube videos I watched, they said that lighting is the most important part of your video and natural light is the best light to use, and hey, it’s free, right? Well I couldn’t  get the right amount of light to video my friends nails, and after struggling for awhile longer, I closed the blinds and pulled the curtains back to its original position (-sigh-). Then I continued to struggle some more, but eventually I finally got the lighting just right. I began taking pictures of the step-by-step process of doing her nails, while alternating  with recording.

Me vs. Nicky D

A quick detour from my story; I have a Nikon D3200 aka Niky D, and it doesn’t have an LCD monitor that I can flip around to see what I’m doing, while I’m doing it. Basically, I had to keep getting up to make sure everything was positioned perfectly. Naturally, in doing so, my hand was blocking what I was doing to her nails the whole video (unbeknownst to me).

Accepting Imperfection

I was a little discouraged when I went back to start editing and merging everything together, thinking all my work was is vain. Or was it? One of my biggest downfalls is perfectionism. I want to be perfect at whatever I set my mind to. The perfect example is my career! Nails are my passion, and I want to do it perfectly. I always expect my clients to leave my chair happy and excited about their nails (even though that’s not always the case). I literally drive myself stark raving mad, when I see a client is not happy with their nails, and I usually end up blaming myself.

This simply IS NOT  healthy in any way shape or form. Striving for perfection can be a good thing, providing you don’t let disappointment send your emotions on a downhill roller coaster ride.  Sometimes in trying to be perfect you forget that its ok to make mistakes.

The idea I had in my head was, I was going to film my first tutorial, and it was supposed to be perfect on the first try. But it didn’t work out that way.

It’s imperative to learn to accept these things when it happens, and move forward, looking at the bumps in the road as “lessons for life” as my bestie always says. I don’t like it when she’s right, but she usually is.

When I start to feel like this, the serenity prayer comes to mind. If you’ve never heard of it before here it is.

Before I end my post, I wanted to share some of the pictures from my photo shoot fail. Below are some of the pictures I took. For all my photographers out there, I need your help. By looking at my pictures, where did I go wrong? I’m open to advice.

Welcome to Talontedigits

Welcome to Talontedigits

Hey guys, welcome to my site! This is where I’m going to put a boring cliché summary about who I am and the premise of my blog.

My birth certificate says my name is Jody, but I prefer Jojo. I’m a child of God, a mommy to a beautiful little girl, and I have been doing nails for 6 years. Doing nails is my passion, although my degree is in Linguistics. One day I’ll tell you how I came into my current profession. It was a long time coming.

I would call myself a jack of all trades/ master of none,  but my main focus of this website will be nails…. I think. You’ll get to know me, I have a passion for an array of things, and I will also touch lightly on other crafts that I am passionate about, like: inspirational posts, jewelry making, sewing, cooking as well as topics like dance, family, travel, hauls and other randomness.

I have been sitting on this blog for about a year or more, talking myself into starting it up, and talking myself out of starting it up. Eventually, I got it going (as you can see), but then I told myself I had to wait for the perfect time to launch it. Come to find out through reading multiple blogs, there is no perfect time. So here I am, writing this post while watching Guardians of the Galaxy.

One thing I can say is, starting this blog is both exhilarating and terrifying. I hope I can build a brand that my readers can be proud of one day!!!

So, uh welcome to my nail blog/ mom blog/ life blog.
